Capital Project Progress at SGI, Kimberly Moritz

The capital project approved by our taxpayers will take place over the course of the next three summers. Our administrative team has been working with our architectural firm and our construction management team to plan the details of the project for submittal to the New York State Education Department. While much of the capital project includes items that aren’t very exciting to plan, like heating, flooring, roofs, pavement and sidewalks, there are some aspects that are fun to plan and consider. We have been working on selecting the colors for the track, the lining of the gym floor, and other details of the project.

Because of the failure of materials on a part of our roof at Springville Elementary, we expedited the roofing part of our project so that we could gain New York State Education approval in time to do the work this summer. On Thursday, March 16, 2017, bids were received and opened and at the Board of Education meeting on March 27, 2017, we are set for BOE approval to award the contract to the winning bidder.

We will begin work on May 3 with the District Office roof. Also being replaced this summer will be the natatorium roof at SHS, a small section of roof that’s had wind damage at SHS, about half of the roof at SES, and the shingle portion of the roof at Colden Elementary. The SMS roof is more complicated and will be replaced along with the upgrades to the rooftop HVAC units in the summer of 2019.

The main capital project work will be done in the summers of 2018 and 2019. There is much work needed and we are grateful for the support of our SGI community.
