The Varsity Girls Basketball team played host to their annual Emerling Holiday Tournament over the Holiday Break. The girls opened play against MEC and came away with a 39-24 victory. The girls controlled the game early behind Leah Franks 10 first quarter points, she ended up leading all scorers with 12 points on the evening. The stifling defense of the Lady Griff’s was on full display as they forced a season high 22 turnovers. Sydney Rosati and Ivette Lewandowski each scored 8 points, Grace Zabawa added 4 points, Nyah Solly, Mackenzie Engel and Ryan Stedman each scored 2 points with Jess Engel rounding out the scoring with one point.
The girls played in the championship game one day later against the undefeated West Seneca East Trojans. The girls played one of their best games on the year yet fell short in the end. Once again Leah Frank started the team off hot in the first quarter scoring 10 of her 12 points in the first 8 minutes of the game. That quarter saw some great back and forth action between both teams. The girls were down by 4 points at halftime and as many as 13 points in the third quarter. The girls tightened up their play led by the sharp shooting skills of Ivette Lewandowski and some big shots made by Ryan Stedman. The team took a two point lead in the 4th quarter after Kelsey Zabawa finished a beautiful low post move. Unfortunately, West Seneca East got the best of the Lady Griff’s in transition as they repeatedly got out in space and finished at the basket to bring home the win. The girls lost 57-47, despite the score the girls made massive strides with their scoring and rebounding. Scorers from the game included: Leah Frank (12 points,) Ivette Lewandowski (19 points,) Ryan Stedman (6 points,) Kelsey Zabawa (4 points,) and Nyah Solly, Grace Zabawa, and Mackenzie Engel all finished with 2 points apiece. The girls host a HUGE league game tonight at 6:00pm at the High School when Maryville comes to town. Great job girls!!!!
