The varsity girls tennis team sent three representatives to ECIC’s on Friday afternoon and came away with an excellent showing. In first singles action Lily Vanuga advanced past the first round with a resounding straight set win over the first singles from Starpoint by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Lily controlled the match throughout and played at a high level. Lily had to wait three hours before her next match and played against a very tough player from Clarence. Despite the loss in straight sets Lily played tough in both sets.
In doubles action, Maria Rumfola and Haylee Cerrone battled a tough team from Williamsville East but fell in straight sets 1-6, 0-6. The games were far closer than the set scores. The duo from Springville forced 6 games into Deuce (no ad scoring so next point won the game) but couldn’t pull out any of those close games. The girls hadn’t played doubles all season so they did a great job considering the circumstances by not playing doubles all season and competing against a very large school.
Lastly, the team walked away with a very prestigious award, the first ever of its kind in ECIC, as the team was awarded “Team Sportsmanship of the Year”. The award was voted on all ECIC schools competing in the tournament. This award reflects the true character in which each member competed with during the course of the season. It was a very deserving award for a great group of individuals. Other accolades for the team included: 1st team Division 4 for Lily Vanuga in singles and Grace Terhune along with Elle Schosek won 1st team doubles for Division 4.
