The varsity girls tennis team made it three in a row on Wednesday night with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Depew Wildcats. The first point was won by the 1st doubles tandem of Grace Terhune and Elle Schosek in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Both girls game out with much more energy and controlled the match from start to finish. The second point was won by 3rd singles player Maria Rumfola. Maria was precise with her ground strokes and took the 6-3, 6-2 win. In first singles action Lily Vanuga lost 2-6, 2-6 but showed more consistent play with her drop shots and net play. In second singles action Haylee Cerrone fell 1-6, 3-6. The second set could have gone either way, unfortunately Haylee didn’t come out on top but her play improved dramatically which put her in a great position to attempt a comeback. As the match was tied up at 2-2 it all came down to the “cardiac kids”, Julie Bartoszek and Ava Dziak. They won the first set 6-3 but dropped the second set by a score of 6-2. In the decisive third set the girls cleaned up their play and applied more pressure on the rival Wildcats. Because of that, the girls walked away with a hard fought 6-4 win.
That third set win gave the Lady Griff’s the match win and a three game winning streak. In exhibition action the tandem of Emmie Weiss and Marissa Martens was fantastic in a 6-1, 6-0 straight set win. Both girls continue to show improved skills all over the court. Finishing off the exhibition sweep was Layla Gartler. Layla played singles and showed off her athleticism and length to get the win at 5-6, 6-3, 6-0.It was a tremendous night all in all for the girls whom are now undefeated in league play and travel to West Seneca East to shoot for their fourth win in a row. Great job girls!!!!
