Varsity Girls Basketball Opens League Play

The varsity girls basketball team opened up league play on Friday night and walked away with a 51-34 victory over the Depew Wildcats. The girls started off a little slowly in the beginning going down early but stormed back thanks to the sharp shooting duo of Ivette Lewandowski and Mckenzie Owens.  Those two combined for three 3’s in the first 8 minutes to help keep the Griff’s in the game.

The second quarter came and brought new life to the Griff’s defensive effort which was spearheaded by Meg Rehrauer.  Meg was tenacious on that end of the floor as she held down Depew’s best scorer thanks to some incredible individual efforts in not giving up any open shots.  The girls took a 16 point lead into halftime and eventually stretched their lead to over 20 points in the third quarter.  There were some great hustle plays by Rachel O’Neal and Jess Engel.  Both girls showed excellent toughness on the boards.  Gracie Attebery continues to impress with her hustle and versatility on the floor.  All in all, Belle Oakley was fantastic for the Lady Griff’s.  Oakley was a great communicator and altered many shots by the opposing Wildcats.

 Scoring on the night were:

  • Mackenzie Owens- 19
  • Ivette Lewandowski- 14
  • Meg Rehrauer-12
  • Belle Oakley- 3
  • Jess Engel- 2
  • Gracie Attebery- 1
