The varsity girls tennis team climbed out of an early deficit to defeat the visiting Cheektowaga Warriors by a score of 4-1. SGI had to forfeit the third singles position so that meant Springville had to win three out of the four matches to take home the win, and they did just that and more.
The girls took the first point on the afternoon behind the strong play of first doubles competitors Haley Cerrone and Maria Rumfola (6-2, 6-0.) Both girls displayed consistency from the service line and had many ground stroke winners for the comfortable win. The next point was won by the duo of Anna Franklin and Rachel O’Neal (6-1, 6-0.) Anna was ferocious at the net ending many points in favor of the Lady Griff’s and Rachel continues to show her improvement in all phases of her game.
The next match was won by second singles player Caleigh Trzcinski (6-2, 6-1) thanks in large part to her consistent ground strokes throughout the match. The senior was determined to come away with the win for herself and teammates! The fourth point was won by first singles player Hannah Yetter (6-3, 6-1). Hannah played well throughout the match jumping on her opponent’s second serve and driving home countless winners to bring home the win.
In exhibition action Grace Terhune won her set by a score of 6-3 and displayed her consistent play throughout the match. The girls are now 4-3 overall and remain undefeated at home. The Lady Griff’s have a very busy week ahead of them (4 matches) and it starts today when they play host to the East Aurora Blue Devils. The match starts at 4:30 so come out at support this excellent team!!!
