Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District has recently been informed by the New York State Education Department that we are required to make some changes to the way students use programs provided through Google. This is a change being made statewide because of the constraints of NYS Education Law 2-d which limits access to student personally identifiable information (PII) as well as Google’s limitations to sign a Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) for additional service. We want to provide advance notice of these upcoming changes for our staff and students.
So, what does this mean for your child(ren) and students at SGI?
Both students and teachers can continue using the following programs:
Google Core Services (Gmail, Classroom, Drive, Docs, Slides, Forms, Calendar, Sheets)
Students will no longer be able to access these additional programs:
Google Additional Services (YouTube, Translate, Earth, Photos, etc.)
Additional services will be disabled for students upon return from the holiday break
Please be assured that English as a New Language (ENL) staff is prepared with alternative ways of using Google Translate and translation for their students.
Please note that teachers will still be able to embed YouTube videos in Google Classroom and in other educational apps for viewing by students.
While these changes may appear to be significant, we are confident they will have minimal disruption to our students’ daily use of educational technology. Our District is commitment to prioritizing student safety while complying with Education Law 2-d Privacy requirements. If you have questions, please reach out to JoAnn DePue, Director of Technology, jdepue@springvillegi.org.
